How the wingdings translator — text to wingdings and wingdings to text works

  1. Each Latin letter is mapped to its visual Wingdings counterpart.
  2. Unicode dingbat characters are used, so the result copies and pastes anywhere.
  3. Unmapped characters pass through unchanged.
  4. Reverse mode decodes Wingdings symbols back to plain text using the same map.

Rules and edge cases

  • Each Latin letter is mapped to the Unicode symbol that matches the Wingdings glyph for that key, so the result copies and pastes without installing a font.
  • Wingdings covers letters and some punctuation; unmapped characters pass through unchanged.
  • Because the output is Unicode dingbats rather than the Wingdings font, it renders the same on phones and on the web.
  • Reverse mode decodes Wingdings symbols back to letters using the same map, matched grapheme by grapheme so emoji-style glyphs with variation selectors still resolve.
  • Direction is detected automatically from the input and can be overridden with the Text → Wingdings / Wingdings → Text toggle.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as typing in the Wingdings font?

Visually close, but different underneath. Typing in the font keeps the letters and changes only the display, so the symbols disappear on any device without the font. Unicode symbols travel with the text.

Can I decode Wingdings back to letters?

Yes. Paste Wingdings symbols and the tool switches to Wingdings → Text automatically, decoding each glyph back to the letter it stands for. Characters outside the Wingdings map pass through unchanged.

Why does text copied from a Wingdings-formatted document not decode?

Font formatting does not change the underlying characters. If a document simply displays plain letters in the Wingdings typeface, the copied text is still plain letters, so use Text → Wingdings on it instead.
